On creating scrolls for friends.

I think I mentioned before that creating scrolls for friends is a very special thing.  I like trying to personalise it to something about them in particular.  It’s also a bit nerve wracking because you *really* want it to go well but as someone still learning the skills you know you’re not going to be…

Who’s a fFraid of Lady Gytha?

Lady Gytha has discovered heavy fighting.  I mean obviously she knew it existed since we both went along to Champions of Lough Devnaree a couple of years back, but now she has *discovered* it in the sense that she is actively partaking in it and probably dreams about it morning, noon and night.  It’s awesome,…

Scrolling, scrolling, scrolling..

I had two shared assignments for Ffair Rhaglen this year, both Silver Martlets for very deserving people.  The first was for Lord Duncan Chaucer with a specific request to include a peacock. My younger son aspires to dress as well as Lord Duncan does, and his hats are the stuff of legend.    Time constraints…

More illuminations..

More to follow, just needed to add the photos but I can say right now that these scrolls are the point at which I have decided once and for all I need to start teaming up with a good calligrapher.  The second one, based on the “Chansonnier De Jean De Montchenu,”  was my practice piece so the script…

Illumination for a Venetian Lady.

Before Raglan I was charged with the task of creating a scroll for Signora Cassandra della Corona.    Creating an award scroll for someone you know is a wonderful thing.  First you get the thrill of a really good secret –  Cassandra has long deserved this particular award – Second, you know things about the…

Sing ho, for the life of a student scribe

The first Aughrim Scriptorium was small but lovely and I learned lots, most usefully to really look at what is happening with colour applications in a medieval painting – I’m currently working on some example initials that I’ll illustrate this point with in my next post.  I didn’t actually do much practical work, lazy me,…

Inks for sharing..

I recently attended Court of Love, this year without any specific job to do which I enjoyed.  I got to see what it was like to attend an event without worrying about anything at all, just enjoying the activities and talking to people.  I had a spectacular multi-day migraine in the run up to the…

T is for thank you..

The really strange thing about a digital photo of a piece you’ve been working on is that you can really quickly see the mistakes you’ve made.  I got myself all in a fluster with this one forgetting where the lines “bundled” (and the thin cross bars should be conjoining) and I still couldn’t really see it…

Lots of things, including ID Coronet and University

I know, I know, I suck at this regular blogging thing, so I thought I better have a sit down and think about what have I been up to.  I have an event to write up, one piece of news that definitely gets its own post and this post will be a general round up. My…

More practice in progress

I volunteered to do a little illumination at a Dun in Mara demo which happened to be running at a games convention Tuathal and I attend every year anyway (Gaelcon), so I needed a practice piece.  I have completely and utterly failed to remember where I got the piece I based this one…
